Psychology is the occult.
At this point I equate psychology with the occult especially when it comes to relationships, counseling and Christianity. Counseling is Biblical and I fully support counseling that is based on the Bible and not on psychology.
One blog comment made a good point about micro vs macro economics. I think their right, the problem lies in macro and not in micro. I suppose psychology could be broken up into two categories, too. There is a side of psychology that doesn’t deal with relationships but more with how the brain functions such as Maslow’s theories. However, the way we are applying psychology to all parts of our lives makes that separation impossible. Recently, I was studying for a teachers certification test and it was kind of scary how much we have turned to psychological theories and intellectual research on how to educate our children.
According to Wikipedia, “The word psychology literally means “study of the soul”.[1] It derives from Ancient Greek: “ψυχή” (psychē, meaning “breath”, “spirit”, or “soul”); and “-λογία” (-logia, translated as “study of”). The term was probably coined in the mid-16th century, and in the following century it also came to mean “study of the mind”. In 1895, the term was used for the first recorded time in reference to behavior.”
We are running in dangerous waters when we think we can study the soul and spirit. God’s Word is the ultimate study of man’s soul and spirit. I don’t think we can do better than that. Any theories of the soul we come up with will surely fall short of that.
It’s also psychological theories (man’s inferior wisdom) combined with the intellectual deception. An example of intellectual deception are the piles of theological research that really amount to leading us farther away from applying God’s truth to our lives.
Theories like personality type might seem like the softer, simpler side of psychology but they are just as powerfully deceiving. Apparently, Carl Jung (the founder of analytical psychology) consulted or was informed by a spirit—that’s basically the occult.
I sense an inherent deception in psychological theories and terminology. For example, I look up a word in the dream dictionary and I find the psychological definitions are just as misleading as the occult ones. I studied some of the Jungian psychological theories such as the dark side, masculine and feminine, and tried to understand my dreams using them but it was just like personality type—it promises deeper understanding but is actually a veil to the truth. And that is exactly how the enemy works, he makes you think you’re getting something (like deeper understanding) but really takes it away. When I got rid of personality type my relationships came into clearer focus and when I got rid of Jungian interpretation of dreams God gave me a deeper understanding of my dreams.
